Definitely up there in, I’d say, my top three, at least. The kind of book that I one day hope to write myself, should I be ever in a position to spend two or three years working on one project! Think my third novel has something close to what I’d like to achieve, but Irving is such a master of this kind of epic novel that I doubt I’ll ever quite match it in skill and application.
Must admit, his more recent work hasn’t quite worked as well for me — but he’s still a huge influence. Cider House has such narrative depth, doesn’t it? Layer upon layer. Wonderful.
